Aluminium is extracted from bauxite, which is actually impure aluminium oxide, Al2O3 . 2H2O, by electrolysis.

Iron is obtained from hematite through a series of steps. (Not electrolysis)

    1. Hematite (iron ore) is first roasted in air so that iron (III) oxide is produced, this dressed ore contains between 30% and 95% iron oxides.

    2. This iron (III) oxide is then mixed with coke and limestone are loaded from the top and heated to a very high temperature in a blast furnace.

    3. Coke reacts with oxygen in the hot air: C + O2 –> CO2. Excess coke react with carbon dioxide to form carbon monoxide: C + CO2 –> 2CO

    4. Carbon monoxide and carbon reduce iron (III) oxides to iron: 2Fe2O3 + 3C –> 4Fe + 3CO2 // Fe2O3 + 3CO –> 2Fe + 3CO2
