2 . Diagram 2.1 shows two regions, R and S, which are separated by a semi-permeable membrane.

    2.a)i)Region R

    ii)There are more water molecules than sucrose molecules, so it is less concentrated.

    iii)-the solution level in region S will be higher than R. “water moves to hypertonic solution”

    -also draw more water molecules in region S, less water molecules in R

    iv)osmosis

     

    b)i)-Plant cells of the cabbage are hypotonic to the concentrated salt solution.

    -Thus water leaves the cells via osmosis.

    -Without the presence of water, cells of microorganism will crenate,, thus preserving the food.

    ii)-draw shrinking vacuole and plasma membrane pulling away from cell wall.

    iii)plasmolysed

     

    c)1.Isotonic drinks balances the concentration of blood plasma and tissue fluids to the cytoplasmic fluid of body cells. This prevents the body cells from crenating or bursting.

    2.These drinks also help to replenish body fluids which have been loss through perspiration.
