    1.a)i)Cell

    ii)M: contractile vacuole

     

    b)i)-In fresh water pond, the amoeba is hypertonic to its surroundings.

    -Thus water diffuses into the contractile vacuole via osmosis.

    ii)-The contractile vacuole is important for osmoregulation. 

    -Once it has reach its maximum capacity of holding water, it will start to contract to release water back to its surroundings.

    iii)Prediction: The amoeba and its contractile vacuole will shrink in size.

    Explanation: In sea water, the amoeba is hypotonic to its environment.

    Thus water diffuses out the contractile vacuole via osmosis.

     

    c)-During P a lysosome fuses with the food vacuole.

    -The lysosome contains lysozymes which digests the food particle. Nutrients obtained from the food will then diffuse into the cytoplasm.

    -During Q, the undigested food is released to the surroundings.
