(b) Diagram 2.2(a) shows a longitudinal section of a root tip. Diagram 2.2(b) shows a process which takes place in zone K. Explain the importance of this process.

(c)(i) A farmer wants to produce a large number of banana plants in a short time for commercial purposes. State the technique that can be used by the farmer and describe the technique.

(ii) State three characteristics of the plants produced through the technique.

    2.a)i) X: S phase (synthesis)

    Y: Cytokinesis

    ii)-In S phase, there is DNA synthesis.

    -There is DNA replication which results in a chromosome having two identical copies of sister chromatids.

     

    b)-This process is important for the growth of new roots.

    -In this zone there are actively dividing cells that undergo mitosis. Thus, producing two daughter cells which are genetically identical and have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

     

    c)i)-The farmer can use a tissue culture technique.

    -Cut out banana plant tissues from the leaves or shoots. Transfer them into a container which has a culture medium.

    -Ensure the culture medium has all the right requirements for optimum plant growth. The right pH, temperature, nutrients and growth hormones.

    ii)1. The plants are genetically identical with each other. There is no variation.

    2.If one plant is susceptible to a specific virus or disease, then all the plants would be susceptible as well.

    3.These plants can be grown in large numbers.

    Extra: -plants can be designed to have specific desirable characteristics. these can then be mass produced.
