5 . Farmers in Kagawa, Japan have produced square-shaped watermelons. This is done during the early stage of the fruit development.

(a) (i) Suggest how the square-shaped watermelons are produced?

(b) Diagram 5.2 shows different shapes of watermelon fruits and the hereditary factors which determine the characteristic of the watermelon fruits. Write the correct genetic terms in the space provided.

(c) Table 5.1 shows the ABO blood group. ABO test is used to determine the blood group. The blood sample is mixed with antibody A and antibody B, if the blood cells agglutinate, it means the blood cell has reacted with the antibodies.

    5. a) i) -The watermelons are grown in a square container.

    -So as they grow, they would take up the space within the container and follow its square shape.

    ii) -A square shapes allows it to be packaged nicely in a box. It eases transportation.

    -Due to its square shape, it wouldn’t be rolling around and they can be easily stored in refrigerators.

    ii) David- A and O

    Lee- O

    iii) Yes it is safe because blood type O doesn’t have any antigens. The victim has blood type B so he has anti-A antibodies and antigen B. Agglutination does not happen as the antibodies don’t have any antigens to bind to.
