(b) A study on interaction between plants was conducted in a farm by a scientist. In his study, he uses maize plants and padi bukit. Diagram 7.2 shows the growth rate of maize plants and padi bukit planted in two different plots.

Suatu kajian tentang interaksi antara tumbuhan telah dijalankan oleh seorang saintis. Dia menggunakan tanaman jagung dan tanaman padi bukit. Rajah 7.2 menunjukkan kadar pertumbuhan pokok jagung dan padi bukit yang ditanam di dua plot yang berbeza.

Diagram 7.3 shows the growth rate of maize plants and padi bukit planted in the same plot. The plants are given the same amount of nutrients and water. Explain the interaction in Diagram 7.2 and Diagram 7.3.

(c) AIDS and dengue are disease which can be easily spread. Explain how these diseases affect a person’s health.

AIDS dan denggi ialah penyakit yang boleh merebak dengan mudah. Terangkan bagaimana penyakit-penyakit ini memberi kesan terhadap kesihatan seseorang.

    7. a) -This food chain shows energy being transferred from the paddy plant (producer) to the primary consumer (grasshopper) and finally the secondary consumer (bird).

    -Energy in the food chain decreases as the trophic levels increase.

    -As energy is being transferred, there is energy loss to the surroundings.

    -Approximately 90% of the energy gets lost through cellular respiration to the environment moving from one trophic level to the next, only 10% of the energy gets transferred.

     

    b) -(Diagram 7.2) Plants planted in different plots. Organisms of the same species in one plot. There is intraspecific competition, maize competes with maize, padi bukit competes with padi bukit.

    -(Diagram 7.3) Different species planted in the same plot. There is interspecific competition between maize and padi bukit.

    -Two different species would compete for different nutrients.

    -The stronger maize plant outcompetes the weaker padi bukit.

    -The stronger maize plant has a higher rate of growth compared to the padi bukit. Results in taller height maize plants.

    -In intraspecific competition, the same species would compete for the same nutrients. Thus intraspecific competition is greater compared to interspecific competition for maize plants.

     

    c)-Individuals infected with the HIV virus could develop AIDS.

    -This virus replicates within lymphocytes and could cause them to burst and be destroyed.

    -This virus attacks the immune system. With a weakened immune system, individuals are susceptible to infections.

    -An individual may die from an infection in which the body would have been able to fought off if the immune system was not weakened.

    -Dengue is transmitted by mosquito vectors.

    -During mosquito bites, the virus is transferred.

    -Dengue can cause high fever, nausea and skin rashes to occur.

    -A severe infection may lead to difficulty in breathing.
