(c) Diagram 4.2 shows a process of seed formation in a type of bean. Explain what will happen when two male gametes penetrate into the embryo sac.

(d) Diagram 4.3 shows the pollination by an organism in order to produce fruits in a farm. A disaster has occurred in the farm and causes the population of the bees to decrease rapidly.

    4. a)

    i)

    Organism A: Asexual reproduction

    Organism B: Sexual reproduction

     

    ii) Asexual reproduction is whereby offspring are produced without the fusion of gametes. This process is carried out through mitotic cell division and only requires a single parent. Whereas for sexual reproduction, it requires the fusion of gametes and two individual parents (a gamete from each parent- gamete produced through meiosis) .

     

    Secondly, asexual reproduction produces genetically identical offspring from the parent. In contrast, offspring produced through sexual reproduction are genetically different from the parents (offspring inherit genes from both parents). 

     

    b) Mrs Nora can use contraceptive methods for organism B. Organism B is a female so tubal ligation can be performed which means that the Fallopian tubes of the organism will be cut and tied. When the ovary releases an ovum, it will not be able to meet the sperm as the Fallopian tubes are cut. 

     

    Extra:

    If the organism is a male, vasectomy can be performed whereby the sperm ducts are cut and tied. Sperm will not reach the ejaculatory duct and will not be present in semen. 

     

    c) Double fertilization will occur when the male gametes penetrate into the embryo sac.

    One of the male gametes will fuse with the egg cell to form the diploid (2n) zygote.

    Whereas, the second male gamete will fuse with the two polar nuclei to form the triploid (3n) nucleus which then develops into the endosperm. 

     

    d) To overcome the problem, the farmer can manually use a paint brush to collect pollen grains from the anther of the plant (produces pollen grains). After collecting the pollen grains, the farmer can then brush this onto the stigma of the flower. The fertilization process can then occur to produce fruits.
