    1. a)

    i) Any two: Chicken, Fox, Eagle

    ii) If the population of fox increases, the population of the eagles would most likely decrease. This is because both eagles and foxes consume chickens and rabbits. With the increasing population of foxes, the number of chickens and rabbits decreases resulting in a reduction in the source of food for eagles. Thus, with a limited supply of food, the population of eagles will start decreasing.

    iii) The primary consumer, caterpillar is not suitable to be used because caterpillars are very small insects, it will be difficult to capture and recapture them especially since most blend into their surroundings and resemble the colour of leaves. Thus, large sample sizes may not be achieved, a larger sample size is important to increase the accuracy of the sampling study.

     

    b)

    i) Grass → caterpillar → chicken → snake → owl 

    ii) Energy in the food chain decreases as the trophic levels increase. Approximately 90% of the energy gets lost to the environment through cellular respiration when moving from one trophic level to the next, only 10% of the energy gets transferred. Thus for this food chain the owl would receive the lowest energy level. 

     

    c) In a prey-predator relationship, the stronger organism, the predator (fox) would hunt and consume the weaker organism, the prey (rabbit). The population of predators are usually lesser and lags behind the population of prey as can be seen from the diagram. The population of prey and predators are maintained in a dynamic equilibrium, an increase in the population of prey results in an increase in the population of predators and when there’s increasing predation, the number of prey start to decrease. When there’s limited food supply (number of prey decreasing), the number of predators would start to decrease as well.
