    b) i) Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin. It is a non-polar molecule. 

    ii) Since vitamin A is a fat (lipid) soluble molecule, it is able to cross the plasma membrane via simple diffusion. In terms of simple diffusion, molecules always move from a higher concentration (outside the plasma membrane) to a lower concentration (within the cell) , down the concentration gradient. 

     

    c) Q is cholesterol. If there is less cholesterol the plasma membrane becomes rigid, the phospholipid bilayer also becomes weaker and permeability to water soluble substances like ions increases. Thus more water soluble molecules would be able to cross the plasma membrane. 

     

    d) Mercury inhibits the respiration of body cell by binding to the active site of carrier proteins. It acts like an inhibitor preventing sodium ions from binding to the active site of the carrier protein and preventing the transport of sodium ions across the plasma membrane.
